HI, I’m Tory McLaren, founder of McLaren’s Kitchen, wife and busy mum of two beautiful girls. My vision with McLaren’s Kitchen is to bring home-cooked food using local quality ingredients with a healthy twist to the masses. My passion for cooking has developed over the years – Being married to a farmer I have learnt the importance of buying local and using British produce where possible. I have always loved to cook and have friends and family over for dinner. Making people smile through food is such a wonderful feeling. Friends and family would always ask me for cakes for events or birthdays so I thought it was time to follow my dream. I have always wanted top open a Farm shop so McLaren’s Kitchen is a stepping stone fulfilling that dream.
I have worked in industry for 20 years developing high tech cameras. Working to high standards has always been inherent and therefore this has helped me when establishing the food for McLaren’s Kitchen.
I love that my business has launched in a very challenging period, the shut down caused by Covid-19 has made me re-evaluate life and I am grateful that I get to work McLaren’s Kitchen around my family and help other by providing takeaway meals to ease the stress of cooking. Family time is very important and our little people grow so quickly and I feel sitting round the table is an important time of day to reflect on the events and share a gorgeous meal together.
As a family we love trying new things, this time last year we got 3 hives of Bees, we had no clue what we were doing but we have just had our first honey off so hopefully you will be seeing more in my cooking and if we get enough honey I can share it with you!
They say your children are always watching you and this is true in my girls, they have set up their own business namely ‘The Pink Ladies’. They bought 22 Black Rock Hens and sell the eggs locally and even to Mummy!! Budding little entrepreneurs!! It is great having fresh eggs the cakes taste so yummy.
A few years ago a friend of mine who was a chef introduced me to working with older grains of Wheat and looking at alternative flours. These flours are low in gluten and help towards better gut health. This is something I have looked into greatly over the last 4 years and I personally feel better when I move away from highly processed white flour so I have tried to work this flour into a large proportion of my cooking. We grow Spelt Wheat on our farm and have this processed locally with Craggs and Co, this gives a lovely nutty flavour to my cakes. We also use our own Crusoe Milling Wheat which we have stone ground at a local watermill. Having my own flour supply has been critical in the last couple of months.
My ethos is at McLaren’s Kitchen is all about cooking from scratch using good quality ingredients, beautiful presentation and friendly service. McLaren’s Kitchen can help you with takeaway meals to ease the busy week or come visit us on the Castle Eden walkway for a coffee and cake and take a break on your walk.
